Start with PracticePanther when you want to evaluate a matter-centered process with forms, signatures and billing in the same working environment. Start with Clio when a particular connection or configuration requirement drives the choice. “Simplicity versus ecosystem” is a question to test, not an established usability ranking.

Who this is for

Solo, 2–5 and 6–10 attorney U.S. firms comparing two practice-management candidates. Include assistants and other staff when asking for a user-based quote: attorney count and paid-seat count are not interchangeable. This is official-source analysis of these products, not a comprehensive market ranking.

Simplicity is the number of handoffs you must manage

Neither a large directory nor a short feature list establishes ease of use. A setup with two well-defined connections can be easier for one firm to operate than a single product that forces repeated manual work. Another firm may have no one available to maintain even one additional handoff.

PracticePanther describes matter workflows and reusable task/event sequences. Clio publishes an app ecosystem and separates some intake capabilities into Grow. The practical comparison is how many people, records and systems participate in your most common matter. Draw the sequence from the first inquiry through engagement, work assignment, invoice and closure. Then ask each vendor to show the transitions without skipping steps.

Intake and eSignature: do not confuse capture with follow-up

PracticePanther’s CRM description includes contact tags and information flowing from intake forms. Its native signing page describes preparing and sending documents within the product. Clio Grow describes a dedicated intake process with forms and scheduling. The useful distinction is the scope of the required follow-up, not whether the product uses the word CRM.

Consider a small family-law office that receives a completed form, needs an assistant to arrange the consultation and waits for an engagement signature. Evaluate the uncompleted cases as carefully as the successful one. Where does the assistant see that the form arrived but the engagement is still outstanding? Who receives the reminder? Can the firm stop reminders after a decision not to proceed? These are evaluation questions, not capabilities we assume both products provide.

For a referral-driven solo practice, a dependable assigned queue may be enough. For a lead-heavy firm, establish the routing and reporting requirement before adding a separate intake platform. Native signatures can remove a reason for a second signing subscription only if the allowance, document types and required evidence are adequate.

Billing and accounting: evaluate the full close-out

Clio and PantherAccounting Plus describe financial workflows beyond sending an invoice. Standard PantherAccounting remains available on Solo, Essential and Business; Business Pro adds PantherAccounting Plus. Confirm the process your accountant will use, including opening balances and historical records, before treating included accounting as a reason to cancel an existing ledger.

An hourly practice should examine a corrected time entry after draft billing. A mixed-fee practice should inspect its different engagement arrangements. For contingency work, a line for contingency billing or general matter expenses is not enough to establish the complete settlement and disbursement workflow. Request a demonstration of that requirement in the quoted configuration.

Pricing and the commitment behind it

Priority vendor pricing and tier sources rechecked for the facts below. All dollar amounts below are USD per user per month unless stated otherwise. An annual rate is a monthly equivalent with annual billing, not a monthly contract.

These are subscription inputs, not complete firm quotes. Count attorneys and staff who need paid access, then add any implementation, migration, payment-processing, connector and third-party charges. Confirm minimum seats, renewal terms and cancellation conditions. Unknown costs are not zero.

PracticePanther pricing cadence rechecked October 4, 2026: the annual and monthly selector states were verified separately. These per-user inputs are not an all-in firm quote. The Finder displays the clarification without changing its recommendation rules or calculating a PracticePanther firm total.

Ask each vendor to price the same workflow and seat count. Comparing an entry plan without required intake or document tools against a fuller bundle produces a misleading value comparison.

What changes with firm size?

Team-size evaluation priorities
Firm sizeStart with this questionAvoid this assumption
SoloDoes the smallest eligible configuration cover the daily matter and communication work?A solo plan label means every required feature or staff seat is included.
2–5 attorneysCan one person hand off a matter and another find the next action and financial responsibility?A shared account or unrestricted access is an acceptable substitute for the right seats and permissions.
6–10 attorneysCan the firm define access and responsibilities without everyone administering the system?A bigger team automatically needs a dedicated CRM, advanced AI or the highest tier.

Clio’s table lists two custom roles on Core and broader role scope on higher tiers; PracticePanther lists custom security roles from Essential. Those labels are reasons to inspect the permission model. They are not proof that either product matches every ethical wall or matter-access requirement.

Choose Clio if…

  • A named integration or a particular permission/workflow requirement drives the purchase, and the quoted tier meets it.
  • You have someone who can own connector checks and any separate Grow intake process.
  • You accept a quote-based comparison and can evaluate the full configuration before committing.

Choose PracticePanther if…

  • You want to investigate a matter-centered workflow with forms and routine signing, and the chosen tier covers those steps.
  • Your intake process can be handled by the documented contact/form/workflow approach after a realistic demonstration.
  • The accountant’s requirements and the written billing terms support the selected plan, including Business Pro if Accounting Plus is needed.

Neither may be ideal if…

Your required specialized workflow cannot be demonstrated, the implementation has no owner, or the complete quote exceeds the available budget. An integration project does not solve an undefined process. Consider MyCase as another bundled candidate and use the same evaluation scenario; do not assume a switch will pay for itself.

What to skip and our verdict

Skip a duplicate practice-management core. Skip a second routine signing tool if the included one covers the requirement. Defer advanced automation and AI unless you can define the input, reviewer and acceptable output. We have not verified AI feature parity between these vendors and do not use it to declare a winner.

Our verdict: choose based on demonstrated work and a complete quote. PracticePanther remains in this comparison on editorial merit; whether FirmTechGuide is eligible for a vendor’s affiliate program has no bearing on the recommendation.

Research limitations

This is official-source desk research, not hands-on product testing. Capabilities are vendor-documented; workflow consequences and best-fit judgments are FirmTechGuide analysis. We have not independently established ease of use, implementation time, support quality, performance, savings, security superiority or legal compliance. No numerical vendor scores are assigned.

A listed feature is not proof that it handles your exact matter, document or accounting requirement. Use fictional data for evaluation and check the terms before introducing real information. Software alone does not establish compliance with professional, privacy, trust-accounting or document-execution requirements.
